Choosing the Right Keywords
Do you know where to start when choosing keywords to
advertise online or why is it so important
to choose the right keywords? Keyword
advertising is your gateway to the internet world. Not only does choosing the right keywords
bring you business, but it can also help your with search engine optimization
as well.
The right keywords in your list can help you break even or make a profit.
Make sure you are choosing the right keywords that best reflect your product,
location, and type. Choosing the right
keywords can depend upon the size of your budget or the term of your
advertising plan. When you start testing keywords I wouldn’t just dive right into the “hottest” or
“most popular” keywords for your business or industry. I would tend to look at keywords that are
popular for search, but are not as popular for competition. Over 87% of the businesses go for the “gusto”
and pay ridiculous advertising dollars for the highest quality keywords, but
they forget about the "low hanging fruit" that lies online as well.
When businesses start advertising online they start thinking
“nationally” or they don’t think like a customer. I see it all too often that the advertising
manager or owner of the business is to smart for their own good. They often think inside their own little
world and they are not thinking what their customers would actually type in for
a keyword or phrase. Yes, it’s true that
if they were a mortgage company they would type in the word “mortgage” for a
keyword, but if that keyword was going for $8.76 per click would they rather
have a keyword (phrase) like “how do I qualify for a mortgage” for a cost per
click of $2.90? You need to always think
locally, especially if your business is local. Take a Dr.’s office for example. Make sure you
advertise your local geography first like “Atlanta Oral Surgeon”, “Augusta
Orthodontist”, “New York Root Canal Doctor”, and so on.
I’ll give you a short example of this type of keyword
advertising that just happened to me over the weekend. My air conditioner was struck by lighting on
a Saturday, so I immediately went to the web and typed in “Naples Air
Conditioner Repair Man”. Long story short I chose the first company that
came up on the search and the one that answered the phone. My point here is to think like a customer,
because the person who did the right keyword advertising received
the reward of me choosing their business. This in turn had me shelling out over $500.00
to get it fixed!
